It all started with a bottle of wine, a couple stockdog puppies, and an idea. That was how three ranch women (Natasha Reichlin, Deborah Armstrong, Crystal Smith) decided to formulate the Cariboo Stock Dogs club and resurrect the sanctioned BCSDA Arena Trials. Their exuberant attitude and motto of “Why not?” was felt through out the Wild & Woolly Trials on May 13-14. Each day was a single arena trial with two runs per dog/handler
Tireless fundraising and brainstorming led to a first class event. From morning coffee to get the handlers perked up for their classes to an air-conditioned dog cool-down area with splash pools to combat the heat, they were the ultimate hostesses.
“We are so excited to be a part of the BC High School Rodeo Finals as well,” they said. “It helps promote the usefulness of these invaluable dogs and introduce the next generation of ranchers and farmers to stockdogs.”
The trio also hosted a two-day clinic with Lee Lumb on May 11-12 that was exclusively for new handlers and their dogs. Eight handlers came to learn how to train their dogs and ten people came to audit the clinic. “
People want to know how to better train their stockdogs,” they said. “Trialing is a growing sport and many people want to try it out. It doesn’t matter how you do in the trial, it’s about the support everyone has for each other. Sometimes we’re just happy the dog laid down.”
“We learned so much with organizing this event,” they said. “The ideas are already being plotted out at our margarita meetings for the September Trial/Clinic.”
